Four injection options.
We’ll explain which, if any, is right for you, with honest pros, cons and costs.
Cingal®
Hyaluronic acid + steroid in one injection, for knee osteoarthritis. Fast relief from the steroid, with longer-lasting joint support from the hyaluronic acid.
Monovisc®
Hyaluronic acid with no steroid, for larger joints: knee, hip, shoulder and ankle. Relief builds over a couple of weeks and can last six months or more.
Orthovisc®
Hyaluronic acid for smaller joints and some tendon pain, such as thumb, finger and wrist arthritis or tennis elbow. Usually a course of up to 3 injections, a week apart.
Steroid injection
Rapid relief of inflammation in a joint, tendon sheath or bursa. Usually works within 2 to 3 days, and we use that window to get your rehab going.
Joints we treat.
Knee
Osteoarthritis and persistent knee pain. See our knee clinic.
Hip
Hip arthritis and some causes of pain on the outside of the hip.
Shoulder
Shoulder arthritis, and inflammation such as bursitis.
Ankle and foot
Ankle arthritis and small-joint arthritis in the foot.
Hand and wrist
Thumb-base and finger arthritis, and some tendon problems.
Elbow
Some cases of tennis elbow.
Your visit, step by step.
Assessment
We examine the joint, review any scans and confirm whether an injection is right for you. We can arrange imaging if you need it.
Injection
In clinic, guided by ultrasound where needed so the needle lands exactly where it should. It usually takes a few minutes.
Follow-up and rehab
We check how you’re responding and plan your rehab, so the benefit lasts beyond the injection.
Is an injection safe?
Most people have no problems. Some have pain, swelling or stiffness in the joint for a day or two afterwards. Infection is rare. Call us straight away if the area becomes hot, red and increasingly painful, or you feel unwell or feverish.
Injections may not be suitable if you have
- An infection in or around the joint, or a skin problem where the injection would go
- An allergy to hyaluronic acid, steroids or local anaesthetic
Tell us first if you
- Take blood thinners such as warfarin
- Have diabetes (steroid can raise blood sugar for a few days)
- Have an infection or are taking antibiotics
We check all of this at your assessment.
Injection questions, answered.
Do I need a referral for an injection?
No. Book an initial assessment directly. If an injection is right for you, we can usually plan it from there.
How much do joint injections cost?
Cingal® and Monovisc® are £375, including your assessment and follow-up. Orthovisc® and steroid injections are priced on request, as they depend on the joint and the number of injections.
How many steroid injections can I have?
Usually no more than 3 a year in the same joint. We’ll talk through what’s sensible for you.
Are your injections image-guided?
Where it helps accuracy, for example in small joints, we use ultrasound guidance.
Will an injection fix the problem?
An injection can give a valuable window of relief, but it rarely works alone. That’s why every injection comes with a rehab plan.
